put out data this morning, close in several states but still in ohio, mitt romney down by 8 points among likely voters. i think that's very problematic for him. if he loses ohio getting to 270 electoral votes becomes not impossible but much more difficult. >> at the same time in the national poll, right track up to 40%, still not great, but it's the highest number we've seen in a number of years. this is better for the president. the enthusiasm gap still favors the president. >> yeah. the right track number i think is fascinating, andrea, because there's no obvious reason in the country in terms of economic indicators or anything else that people should be all of a sudden getting more optimistic about the direction of the country after they spent several years in the 30s in terms of people saying right direction but you're right, any kind of boost of optimism, and you've actually seen president obama moving in coordination with this, the question of is president obama handling the economy still not great but better. anything like that, helps the incumbent. remember, president obama

the top down by mitt romney. >> now, one of the things about barack obama that you know from having worked so closely with him is that sometimes he can be a little professorial, not to put down professors, but in a debate you have to think about the clock and think about the punchy line. is it a challenge for his current team to get him to speak in sound bites? >> well look, i used to joke with him it takes him 30 seconds to clear his throat sometimes. and look, i think -- look there's no doubt that, you know, you've got a very small window of time and brevity is certainly important and as i said earlier, andrea, the president hasn't done these formats in four years. mitt romney has done these pretty recently as part of 20 republican debates, but look, i have no doubt that the president will be well prepared and look, i don't actually think this debate is going to be decided by some snappy zinger or snappy sound bite. i think the american people, particularly the undecided voters that you, chris and mark were talking about, are really looking for these candidates to discuss what they want

and the first times that americans will get to see mitt romney and barack obama side by side. not only hear their words and assess their styles and their candor, but also get to hear the ideas. i think that's what this whole race comes down to, is the record. i would say the failed record of barack obama on jobs, on gas prices, on debt management, on energy and compare that to the vision and the ideas for the future that mitt romney has. it's very important. the last couple weeks there's been a little bit of a movement for the president. but listen, speeches don't create jobs. rhetoric doesn't create jobs. good ideas do. and the president, despite his efforts, has failed to help the american people get back to work and i think mitt romney has better ideas. that's what this debate will be about. >> business crill crystal and o republicans have questioned whether mitt romney has been specific about his ideas. here's paul ryan on fox news sunday. >> lowering tax rates by broadening the tax base works. and you can -- >> but i have to -- you haven't given me the math. >> i don't have the time --
